Women In Trucking: Looking Ahead To 2025
For decades the trucking industry has been seen as a male-dominated industry. Nowadays, if you still think this you’re not actually wrong. It still is very much male-dominated. However, this perception is changing and in recent years there’s been a serious uptick in the amount of women in trucking across all different roles.
As a women-owned business, Premier Expeditors Inc. is proud to be a part of this transformative journey. As we prepare to enter into another exciting year in 2025, we’re going into our 33rd year of business. So, we’re taking this time to reflect on the role of women in trucking, share our own story and most importantly thank our customers and agents who have made our success possible.
The Current Landscape Of Women In Trucking
Stereotypically the freight world is a man’s world. The idea of the physical demands in the freight industry has put many women off for years. However, statistics are showing that in recent times more and more women are joining the trucking world.
Growing Presence Of Women In Trucking: According to the Women In Trucking Index, almost 10% of all truckers on our roads in the USA are now women. This is a much larger percentage than when we started PEI back in 1992, although we have seen that this percentage is down from the 12% we saw last year. However, the overall trend is clear that women are establishing a foothold in the trucking industry.
Women In Leadership Roles: Beyond the cab, a large number of women who work in trucking are stepping into executive roles, leading companies toward better inclusivity and sculpting company cultures.
Why Diversity In Trucking Is Important
The benefits of partnering with a diverse company go far beyond social responsibility. At PEI, we have seen firsthand how inclusivity strengthens our operations and enhances customer experience.
Benefits Of Having A Diverse Team In Trucking
Different Perspectives For Better Problem Solving: Having a diverse team means that you get a wide variety of perspectives, which in turn leads to innovative solutions for complex challenges. More input from different demographics of life, help think of the unthinkable.
Communication: Now, we’re not bashing men, in fact we hire and work with lots of men at PEI. But one thing we have noticed is that women in leadership roles tend to show clear, empathetic communication which is key in the logistics sector.
Modern Values: A company that can prioritize diversity, shows that they have modern values and are great forward thinkers.
Great Customer Connection: Being a women-owned business, can often resonate well with customers who prioritize working with organizations that align with their commitment to equality and inclusion.
Adding the mix of men and women into the world of trucking isn’t just about representation, it means we’re creating a workplace where everyone’s voices are heard to contribute to smarter solutions.
Common Challenges
While we’re seeing a positive change in diversity in the trucking indu
stry, it’s clear that there are still some barriers up stopping women from seeking careers in trucking, including:
1. Safety Concerns: On and off the roads women often experience a level of harassment. Then on the roads, safety is concerning for women including, theft, and other unsafe conditions like sleeping in the cab at pitstops, etc. which continue to deter a lot of women from pursuing careers in this industry.
2. Work-Life Balance: There is often this stereotype that women have more caregiving responsibilities in their home life than men do. So long periods on the roads and away from home are yet another reason women are deterred from seeking a trucking career.
3. Stereotypes: Unfortunately, the stereotype that all truckers are men and trucking only being a “mans job” is still very apparent today.
Premier Expedited Inc. (PEI) For 33 Years
Despite these challenges, we’ve proven, along with every other woman-owned trucking company and female worker in this industry that you can do anything you put your mind to. It really is true! Victoria Sparks and Michele Wilson founded PEI back in 1992, with the singular aim of providing exceptional logistics solutions while fostering an inclusive, and family like company culture.
What Sets PEI Apart?
Women-owned: We’re proud to have set up a women-owned business and not only have survived, but thrived in the world of truck transportation.
Vast Experience: Over three decades of experience in the business has set us up to navigate any industry challenge we might be faced with.
Family Culture: This might sound cliche, but we really have adopted a family like culture at PEI, our employees and customers mean the world to us!
Looking To 2025
Hungry For Growth (But not too big): We like the idea of staying small enough that we can stay personal with our customers but we also realize that a certain level of growth is important to keep servicing our customers efficiently. So, we’re entering 2025 with a passion to grow. This year alone, we’ve added a few new agents across different regions of the USA and we’re not stopping there. Each new agent allows us to further fulfil our customers every requirement, so it is our goal to ensure we’re constantly growing, but with the right people.
